Nika
started practicing yoga 8 years ago in an attempt to heal some of the
numerous sports injuries she had suffered in high school and college. At
the point when she started practicing, she was not able to walk
comfortably, or sleep on her sides because of her painful bursitis. She
also had tendonitis in both wrists, and strength issues in a hand that had
had extensive reconstructive surgery. She began practicing a very
therapeutic form of yoga called Svaroopa yoga, which is an alignment based
form of yoga that focuses on supporting your body and allowing it to let
go of the stress and pain we all pick up during our regular lives. After
six months of daily practice,
Nika
was able to sleep through the night, and had fallen in love with yoga.
For the last 2 years,
Nika
has been studying Iyengar yoga, which she found was a natural evolution
from Svaroopa for her, as it continued to focus on alignment, but also
included more strength and balance building poses. She has also found
that the spiritual and emotional strength and balance that come from yoga
are as important to her as what she gains from the physical practice.
Being comfortable in her own body is
Nika’s
constant reminder about why she loves yoga so much, and she looks forward
to helping her students find that same joy in using yoga to improve their
quality of life.
Students practicing with
Nika
can expect a teacher who will work with her students to help them move
beyond their current limitations and move forward in a fulfilling
yoga practice. Her goal for all of her students is for them to be able to
develop a strong practice of their own, and will help students in class
work through whatever physical issues they come with to be more
comfortable.
